2020Politics of Storytelling
Drawing inspiration from the third wave feminism, this course touches upon the importance of personal narrative as a way to build history. In this course students will learn how to investigate, contextualize, and narrate their personal narratives using different media such as video, performance, sculpture, etc. This class offers a variety of ways of thinking through making by learning about the history of storytelling, studying art works as well as reading scholarly articles that deal with “Politics of Storytelling”.

Core Studio Practice Intensive I and II
Core Studio is a fast-paced, yearlong sequence of courses that introduces students to both disciplinary and interdisciplinary art and design practices. These team-taught classes explore the materials and techniques of surface, space, and time (2D, 3D, and 4D), as well as the connections and interplay of these areas. Core Studio integrates the formal with the conceptual, traditional with the contemporary, and makes visible a variety of approaches in current cultural production in order to foster the development of students’ emerging practices as makers and thinkers.

Where is the friend’s home? –Designed and Developed by Soheila Azadi
What is home? Where do we belong? What constitutes the idea of a “home”? Students in this class explore different ways to investigate, document, contextualize, and portray their personal memories of “home”. Framing our personal memories within the Feminist theory, we understand that the personal is political and therefore has global implications. “Home” and memories attached to it, is defined differently based on people’s sociopolitical and geopolitical conditions. In this class, students will learn diverse ways of making and thinking through what they define as “home” and memories and stories related to it in relation to the current political climate.

Research Studio I, explores the themes, practices, and contexts of cultural inquiry undertaken by artists. Students experience a variety of research methodologies, both conventional and alternative, utilizing collections and archives in the School and its extended communities in response to studio- based project assignments.

A Thousand and One Night Stories- Designed and Developed by Soheila Azadi
Course begins to investigate personal experiences as a starting point to create visual art. Drawing from second-wave feminism, it becomes clear that there is a close engagement between private experience and the social and political structures that shape our world. Through this class, students will address different ways to investigate, document, contextualize, and share their personal stories and introduce diverse ways of making and thinking through these material investigations.
