Tea Party
Tea Party concerns experience of parties that are specific to women. In this event a number of women gather in United States and Skype with a number of women in another country. I used Skype as a social media tool to eliminate physical distance between people. The goal is to learn more about women all over the world, and to find out about what these parties have to offer. Often times these parties in specific oppressive countries, become therapeutic and liberating for women.
Another goal is to bring in people from conflicted countries and religions together to form communities where participants have equal roles while they share communal creative goals. I create a space that fill the “absence of community” that people often feel as immigrants, queers, Muslims, Jews, women, etc. My attempt is to instigate an environment where participants speak for themselves.

In this art event several women at UIC gathered to share experiences and thoughts with a group of women in Iran. I used Skype as a social media tool to eliminate physical distance between people. In this event I generated a space for both groups to open up about their struggles as wives, partners, mothers, sisters and daughters. While both groups were aware of their differences they did create a bond. In this event mothers from each society shared concerns about their children. Children in both sides got to know each other and said their names and waved to one another through Skype. In this work all the differences in language, culture, race, religion, and the conflicts that exist between the U.S. and Iran were recognized, but what mattered was that all participants were people with emotions and thoughts. We shared ideas, thoughts, laughs, recipes, and love.
These parties are very popular in Islamic based countries.
